Hotel Xantener Eck

There was a huge fair on, so the place was busy and service took longer than usual. The staff still did their best and were great. The local food was delicious, and there was a great range of beer.

Getting around was easy, with underground and train stations close by and plenty of spots to eat and drink nearby. I’d stay here again. It’s a gorgeous little hotel full of character, with high ceilings and wood-paneled walls. The bathrooms are a bit dated, but they’re fine, and we really enjoyed the generous traditional breakfast.

There’s a bar downstairs, so don’t count on sleeping before midnight. Arrivals after 6 pm have to let themselves in, and the welcome felt unfriendly. The room was in rough shape. The walls and carpet were stained, the beds were lumpy, the bathroom counter was damaged, and the towels were frayed. Half the bathroom bulbs didn’t work, and the shower head badly needs a vinegar clean to get rid of years of calcium buildup. The furniture looked like it had all come from different dumpsters in the 1980s.

I had a really enjoyable stay. It’s a beautiful, classy building in a central spot, and the place felt homey and clean. The staff were sweet and accommodating. The sound carries, though. You can hear people talking and the floors creaking, and the Wi-Fi connection wasn’t great.
