Hotel Oberschmied

The restaurant was lively, with plenty of locals, and we ate there every night. The brisket was incredibly tender, the rib eye was great, and we enjoyed some excellent meals. Our host came over to welcome us personally and tell us the history of the place, which goes back to the 1400s. On the later evenings we felt we knew the waiters a little; they were capable, efficient and very nice. The restaurant is separate from the hotel. Our apartment was on two levels, with the bedroom upstairs under the roof. The large roof overhang kept the huge balcony sheltered from rain. Inside, the kitchen was well equipped with a dishwasher and fridge-freezer, and there was also a well-stocked minibar. We travel with luggage for all kinds of activities and weather, so the plentiful storage and tucked-away corners were especially useful. We felt welcome from the start. The reception isn't staffed all the time, but getting hold of the hosts was easy, and they made us feel like guests in their home. Parking was simple too. We got a parking card and a visitor card that gave free parking in most village car parks, along with discounts and free entry to several places. The hotel has lots of quirky little decorations that could have felt kitschy, but instead added to its charm. Guests could help themselves to free candy near reception. We love cats, so enjoyed having one wander the halls. It tends to stay in the private area, so people who don't like cats shouldn't be bothered, and we think the allergy risk is minimal. We booked three nights in Reit Im Winkl because of the famous “Dark Sky” area, a 15-minute drive from the village. The rain forecast became increasingly certain, and we would have cancelled if we could have done so without losing money. Since that wasn't an option, we decided to make the best of it. We're really glad we stayed and discovered this little gem. For a trip with hiking and village life, comfortable accommodation and good dining, we'd highly recommend it. We rarely want to return to hotels, but we'd book here again if another roadtrip brings us to the area.
