Hotel Maria Cristina is a city icon, and even a walk past it is worthwhile. The historic character, architecture, and little details are lovely to take in, whether or not you’re a guest. It’s one of San Sebastián’s most impressive buildings, beside the river and close to the old town, in a spot that makes the setting feel especially appealing.

This is a nice hotel in the Marriott group. It’s up to the same standard as the other Luxury Collection hotels, with the great amenities and service you’d expect. Perfect, no complaints.

We stayed at Hotel Maria Cristina (San Sebastián) in August 2025. As an Ambassador Elite, I was told upgrades didn’t apply, and agreed to pay about $4,100 USD. Before a room was assigned, Marriott confirmed in writing that all upgrade fees would be waived. I was still charged in full, offered only points to make up for it, and got no response from Marriott executives after escalating. The hotel and staff are beautiful, and the rooms and service were truly five-star. I would absolutely return. After a lot of back and forth, the Hotel agreed to waive the upgrade fee, though Marriott did not. It’s unfortunate that Marriott’s Ambassador Program didn’t honor its commitment and left the hotel covering the cost of Marriott’s mistake. This has damaged my trust in the brand.

The hotel is fantastic, with a very comfortable bed, a great central location, and staff who were consistently friendly and helpful. Housekeeping was a little hit and miss: once we returned to find no cups, and another time a hotel dressing gown had gone missing. A quick phone call got both issues sorted out.
