Makaira Resort

We ate so well, especially when we had Mare cook for us. Thanks for spoiling us, Mare! My husband Shawn, our friend Chris, and I stayed at this lovely property for a week in mid October, and we were so glad we chose Makaira. Mare and the rest of the staff made everything feel easy and welcoming, from delicious breakfasts and quick, thorough room turns to helping plan activities. They were available when we needed someone, but never overbearing. The location is hard to beat, and the grounds are beautiful. We spent many evenings looking at the stars and moon. The cabins are comfortable, though not brand new, and have a few quirks. But it’s the tropics, so you should expect some bugs and rain. We travel often, usually to Mexico, and loved Makaira and Taveuni so much we may make it our return destination.

The panoramic ocean view from the hilltop resort was beautiful, and we never got tired of it. We even spotted dolphins out at sea on some days. We spent two weeks at Maikara Resort in June and really enjoyed it. The staff were all friendly, and breakfast and dinner came with that amazing view. Mere gave us very good massages and helped arrange trips and taxis throughout our stay. We also met the owner, Roberta, who helped us find the right snorkelling gear. The house reef right in front of Makaira was amazing to explore, and we could head straight in from the beach. We highly recommend the resort.

We were lucky to meet Ajay, a fantastic local taxi driver who also showed us around the island. We got his number from Tramonto, the bar and restaurant across the road, which had great staff, food, and views as well. At Makaira, the breakfast was fantastic, served with a wonderful ocean view. The fresh coconuts were especially refreshing after the five minute stroll to snorkel. Guests can use the snorkelling gear, so it’s easy to see the beautiful coral and fish right nearby. It was a fantastic stay, with kind staff who worked hard to make things go smoothly, and Mary was a wonderful host.

Taveuni was our favourite island while we were exploring Fiji, and we’ll definitely be back. We loved staying here. The rooms were spacious, clean, and had great views, and the staff met every request with a smile. Breakfast was amazing each morning: fresh fruit, coffee, juice, warm muffins, homemade pineapple jam, toast, pancakes, and homemade pineapple syrup. The massages were a lovely extra.
