The taxi ride to the replacement hotel turned into another mess. Reception said they'd arranged the cab and that the hotel would pay, but when we arrived the driver demanded money. He wouldn't hand over our bags until we paid, and even tried to drive off with them. After we had already been dumped at a horrible place, that was incredibly stressful. We'd been in Paris for barely an hour. We'd booked this trip carefully, coming from Amsterdam, arranging dog sitters and time off work. It was our first proper time away in a long while. At check-in we were told the hotel was overbooked, so after our first night we were moved to a completely different property. It was hostel standard at best, old, grubby, poorly maintained, with visible mould and clearly needing a full refurbishment. The photos show the huge downgrade from what we booked and paid for. We were told the new place was “lovely” and of the same standard. This ruined a large part of our trip. The hotel is taking no responsibility and says I have to sort it out with Booking.com. Disaster. Don't book here if you expect to stay where you reserved. You may be told at check-in that you're overbooked and sent somewhere else.
