Hotel & Spa Le Bouclier D'Or

We enjoyed our one night here. The atmosphere was nice, especially the little bar, which felt cozy, and the staff were friendly throughout. For a four-star hotel, though, the room amenities were underwhelming. The bathroom only had a two-in-one shampoo and shower gel, which doesn’t feel up to the expected standard and should be reconsidered. There was no soap at the sink when we arrived. After I mentioned it to reception, they brought one very small bar. It felt a bit cheap, and not like a generous way to make up for the oversight.

Tucked away in Petit Paris, this reasonably priced hotel turned out to be a perfect gem. The large Junior suite was a complete surprise, with a king bed, chandelier, marble bathroom, sofa, and sumptuous décor. The staff were attentive and thoughtful. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

The location is great and the rooms are beautiful, but the place felt boring and blah. The bar and lounge were closed and lifeless, with no music, and the patio was bland, without flowers or much appeal. You have to reserve the spa and pay extra for it. It wasn’t a lot, but I’d usually expect that to be included at a nicer hotel. I also used the valet, which is a nice option, though they were pushy when I checked what time I needed the car the next morning.

The location is hard to fault. Petite France is beautiful, and it’s an easy walk to everything you’d want to see as a visitor. The service, though, left a lot to be desired for the price we paid. Breakfast was ridiculously expensive: 25 euros per adult and 15 euros each for our 1.5-year-old and 3-year-old. We were also charged €26 for a bottle of still water and one breakfast tea bag with a teaspoon of milk. We’d been told the tea and water were on the house when we asked to have them replenished on our second and final night. The hotel itself was okay but had little atmosphere, and there was an odd poo smell around the whole ground floor. The carpet and interior décor need cleaning or upgrading. Our room was large and spacious, but missing basic things you’d expect at that price, including a fridge. They charge through the nose for it, as the tea incident shows. I wouldn’t recommend staying here. There are many better value options around the Petite France area with friendlier staff. It’s definitely not luxury or good value.
