The Raeburn

We waited over 75 minutes for our food, which was frustrating with four children along, two under 10. After an hour waiting for the entrees, we had to ask for more water and eventually some bread. When the food finally came, it wasn't worth the wait. They'd run out of pies at 18:00, the steak was tough, and the chips were under-seasoned.

The food was a highlight. The steak is worth the extra cost, and the kitchen team did a brilliant job at supper and breakfast, making everything with real care. There was also a good choice of Single Malt. We were very pleased with our stay and can't wait to return. Thanks to everyone at the Raeburn! We stayed in No. 1, a lovely room with plenty of space, charming decor and an excellent bed. The bathroom was the best I've had in a hotel for years, and the bath was just heaven. There were plenty of complimentary items, including a nice surprise of teacakes, though the Nespresso pods were a bit limited. The room was slightly warm, but comfortable enough overnight. There was no real noise after ten, though some sound does come through the windows. I noticed a few bits of dust and some wear on the desk, but nothing a quick clean couldn't fix. The location is handy, near a couple of bus stops in the delightful Stockbridge area, a more relaxed part of Edinburgh for cultured types. Staff were a real asset, warm, friendly and helpful from the start. They had no problem checking our bags in early.

Lunch was a letdown for our group of 22, especially the main courses. The chicken pie came in a pot with puff pastry on top, but underneath it was almost soup, and we had to ask for a spoon. The steak frites came with standard frozen chips, and the steak was so tough we all tried it but had to leave it. The cod had no flavour, and we couldn't tell if its side was meant to be fish cakes or potato cakes. The braised fennel was far too soft. The till was unable to work out what they were.

We had a fantastic time at The Raeburn for my wife's birthday. The private dining was excellent, the food was great, and the cocktail choices were brilliant. Staff were very pleasant and attentive. It's dog friendly too, so we could bring our hairy one along. Thanks to Jackie and the team for a great event.
