The reception staff were very friendly, but the room never got the proper clean they said they’d arrange. We asked the next day for a more thorough clean, and although reception agreed, nothing happened. There were also other issues: the floor above squeaked terribly, the lift wasn’t working, and on several occasions other guests, I think, tried to come into our room or knocked on the door. We arrived two hours after check-in and found only one child bed, despite having booked two. Reception moved us, but the replacement room was still being cleaned. When we finally got in, it seemed only the sheets had been changed. The bathroom was disgusting, with the previous guest’s towel still hanging up. There was a dirty shower mat in the bath, and I regret looking underneath it. We were told the new room was an upgrade because it had a sea view, but condensation and mouldy window frames spoiled that. I expected a basic hotel for the price, but not somewhere smelly and dirty.
The bed and towels were clean and comfortable, but that was about the only positive. The location is great, which makes it such a shame that this Travelodge falls so far below basic cleanliness standards. I’d never stay again unless it had been knocked down and rebuilt. We’d booked three nights. Outside, the place was filthy, with cigarette ends everywhere, and looked derelict. The receptionist was generally pleasant, but the only lift was tiny and filthy. Getting to our room meant hiking through dingy, smelly corridors. The room itself was very small, with only a little lamp on. Once I turned on the main light and opened the curtains, ugh: the frames were rotten and covered in black mould, and the glass was so filthy I couldn’t see through it. The carpet was stained and the room generally dirty. There was one plug socket, so I had to unplug the kettle to charge my phone and laptop. The bathroom was freezing. After a shower I saw the state of the shower curtain and wish I hadn’t. It was beyond disgusting, covered in black mould and stains and looked years old. Needless to say, I didn’t use the shower again. Breakfast was very basic with little choice, no fried eggs, a queue, and a long wait for empty dishes to be refilled. However much a hotel costs, it should meet minimum cleanliness standards. Such a shame about the location.
The dirty rooms put me off trying the food. Our first room was dirty, so we moved to another that was better but still not great, with a stain on the duvet and dirty cups. The lift nearest us wasn’t working, which meant either taking the stairs to the fourth floor or walking the length of the floor to the small, rickety lift at the other end. Disappointed with this stay. 🤢
The sockets didn’t work, and the bathroom was outdated and smelled of rancid sewage. The hallways weren’t vacuumed at all during the three days we were there. We heard other guests saying exactly the same things. This is an absolutely disgusting place to stay. Don’t bother coming here.
The building is dated and the cracks are starting to show, but the price reflects that. We booked a family room at the last minute for a very reasonable rate. It was spacious, had fresh essentials, and was in a perfect spot close to Scarborough’s main attractions. Noise wasn’t an issue, and it worked well as a bolt-hole stay. One note: Palm court car park is much closer. We couldn’t find the recommended car park, which was cheaper but much further away. We’d stay again when visiting.
