For one night, this suited me perfectly. I paid £45, and it exceeded my expectations, especially since I couldn’t find anywhere bigger than a shoe box for under £60 within 10 miles when I booked. Check-in at the bar was easy and friendly. My room was a good size, with a high beamed ceiling, a four-poster bed and an ensuite. There was a kettle with tea and coffee, plus soap and towels. Bring your own toiletries, or pop into Aldi next door. There’s plenty of parking, the motorway is only minutes away, and the pub has a nice feel, reasonably priced food and large servings. The room was a little tired in places, and the top of the bed canopy was extremely dusty, though it wasn’t a big deal unless disturbed. The single-glazed window let in more traffic noise, but I still slept reasonably well. The hair dryer looked ancient, so I’d bring your own.

The staff were super friendly and accommodating, and everything came out in good time. The lamb pie with leek mash was stunning, cooked to perfection. I also had pancakes with bananas and maple syrup, and that was lovely too. Five stars.

We only came for lunch. The roast was very nice, and it was two for £20. Staff were friendly and attentive. The free car park is small. My only issue was the toilets and doors, which all need a really good clean, and the wallpaper is lifting and could do with being fixed.

We all enjoyed our meals at this family birthday dinner. Everyone ordered something different, and it all arrived hot. The group had a few dietary requirements, which were handled efficiently. I highly recommend eating here, and we’ll definitely return soon.

We’ll call in again when we travel from Dorset to Gloucester. The food was delicious and the staff were happy, with fabulous service. I had the homemade Chicken Kiev with skinny fries and salad, and my husband chose the homemade Butter Chicken Curry with rice and chips, both from the specials board. We shared a pint of Lemon Meringue Ice-cream. They get very busy, so I’d recommend booking a table.
