De Vere Beaumont Estate

I hardly saw the staff, though they were helpful whenever I needed them. It seems like everyone works hard behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly. The bedroom was comfortable, and our event room was lovely and spacious. It’s a large hotel, tastefully decorated, with lovely green grounds. There’s so much of it that it would be easy to get lost if you’re only there for one night!

The location was the one real plus, since it wasn't too far from the attractions. The stay itself didn't match the description. Our small room was a long walk from reception and the bar, and the stained glass toilet door gave no privacy. On arrival, the toilet hadn't been cleaned and there was poo on the seat. During our three nights, housekeeping never refreshed the room, so I had to ask each day for towels, toilet paper, tea and coffee. For £550 for two people for three nights, with breakfast extra, I expected much better. I've had better service at a Travel Lodge or a Premier Inn.

The suite and the hotel's surroundings, furniture and facilities were outstanding, and we had a wonderful first night there. For the price, the suite was excellent. The buffet was the main letdown: several items ran out more than once, including some only 30 minutes into service. I can't tell whether it was a stock problem or how the buffet was managed, but there was no sign saying if or when empty trays would be refilled. At this price, guests who paid for the buffet can feel short changed. The cost was like a buffet restaurant with several sections and unlimited portions, and an unsupervised buffet can lead people to take very large servings. The coffee machines were switched off at lunch and dinner. Maybe that's normal for the industry, but with such impressive surroundings I expected more. Service was good, though the food and service didn't quite match the looks. It reminded me of a beautiful cruise ship whose food and service can feel merely good, leaving people with mixed impressions. All in all, a great stay, but a place at this level and price shouldn't run out of food.

The hotel is a bit of a maze, though that gives it character. I stayed one night for a work conference, and the setting was beautiful. Staff were kind and helpful, and the food was very good. There was plenty at breakfast.
