The metro station looks closed, but it’s actually open and undergoing renovations. Trains run from 6 am to midnight, and it’s easy to get around. You can ask for a one-day metro card and, for example, pay 5 Gel. The card costs 2 gel, leaving you with three journeys. You can top it up again later, and each journey costs 1 Gel with the card. Be ready for the escalator: it’s fast and the station goes really deep, which I didn’t expect. The trains are okay and look a bit like the London Underground, though this Russian-built station isn’t as ornate. You tap in to enter but don’t need to tap out. The signs are in English and easy to follow. I went to Liberty Square, one stop away, because it was too hot to walk. Liberty station is a bit better, with more ticket booths and machines. You can add money to your card at the station or at the floating machines located all over.

A ride costs 0.5 Lari, and the card you need costs 2 Lari. Trains come about every five minutes, though it can get a little crowded. Public transport in Tbilisi is good, and this is a quick way to get around.

For a quiet stroll away from the tourist crowds, Avlabari Square is a nice area. It feels calm and historic, with little parks, local shops and cafés nearby. Sameba Cathedral and the metro are both easy to reach.

Getting down takes a long ride on the escalator because this station is so deep. It's a standard Soviet-style metro station that could use repairs, and with the renovation underway, there aren't signs showing where to enter.
