Great National Hotel Ballina

The pool visit was expensive, and the facilities felt basic for the price. The changing area was cold, with no family room, so I had to bring a young girl and boy into the men's changing room while men were undressing. A private family space is needed. The shower controls are press-and-hold buttons with no timer, which is awkward for families. The small baby pool was very dirty, with sand and other debris. It needs a revamp, especially given the pay-as-you-go cost and pricey family membership. Pilates and yoga aren't included either.

We felt everything was in hand on our wedding day, thanks to coordinator Denise. She was organised, proactive, quick to answer all our questions beforehand and fully present directing things on the day. The whole team went above and beyond, and nothing was too much trouble. Staff we met throughout the weekend were warm and fantastic, and the rooms were comfortable. We recently got married at the Great National and couldn't recommend it enough.

The bed was really comfy and the room was spacious. Food was good too. Saturday's bar was very busy and could probably have used a few more staff, though the people working did a great job under the circumstances. The gym was decent and not too crowded. I'd happily come back.

The dining room had a relaxed feel, with nice ambient lighting. The bedrooms were the best I've seen in a while travelling through Ireland, and the hotel was clean. I did notice two drawbacks: the bedroom doors slam, so when everyone comes back there's a constant bang, bang, bang. I'm not sure why that hasn't been addressed. Also, it's beside a busy national road, so you can hear the cars going by.
