The Rutland Hotel

There's a nice little reception area where you can sit and look out over the promenade, and the staff were very helpful. They can bring an iron and ironing board to your room if you need one. The hotel has an aged, quaint, nostalgic feel. The corridors and stairs are a bit wonky, but nothing felt unsafe. The lift is very, very small, though it's an older property, so I was glad it had one at all.

I was impressed by how clean the hotel was, the service, and its position on the front promenade. It's at the Laxey end, about a 10-minute walk to the other end. We were on the third floor, and the route to and from our room through different landings and doors felt like following a trail of breadcrumbs, but you get used to it. We stayed during the May '26 heatwave, and the rooms were very hot at night. The only way to cool them was to open the windows.

The food was brilliant, with a good variety, and we had a lovely stay. When my husband left his phone in the room after we'd checked out, the staff went above and beyond to help us. We'd stay again when we return to the island, which was lovely to see too.

The reception and bar staff were very good, and the dining room team were excellent. The food was good quality too. But we felt our privacy was invaded on Sunday 8 March in room 301. We asked the housekeeper twice to come back because it wasn't convenient, but she came in anyway, put down her cleaning box, quickly changed the towels and toilet roll, topped up tea and coffee, then left. If she couldn't return in an hour, she should have told us. Instead, she pushed past and ignored us while we were getting ready to go out. The following two days, her work was half-hearted: no beds made, cups not cleaned, and no toilet paper left. We didn't get her name, but she sounded East European. One socket by the kettle is coming away from the wall, which seems dangerous. The outside steps are very slippery in rain and while being cleaned. Maybe polished tiles aren't the best choice there, and stone steps would be better. Aside from these issues, we had a very good stay.
