Reykjavik Downtown Hotel

We stayed in a clean triple room with comfortable beds. Everything worked, and it was quiet. The shower was tiny, and the bathroom was a little run down, but clean. The only smell was a faint sulfur odor, which is normal for hot water in Iceland. I’d been worried after reading the reviews, but the stay was fine. The location is great. The instructions made it easy to find the entrance, and the front desk staff were lovely. We also received after-hours check-in information in case we needed it.

The location is superb, so I can’t complain too much. I only spent one night, and the room was okay if all you need is somewhere to sleep. There was a little patio, but its door didn’t lock, and neither did the main door. I blocked the main entrance with my luggage in case someone came in. The kitchen outlets didn’t work, and the bathroom light was so dim that I used my phone flashlight to shower. The shower itself was okay, and the hot water worked. The bed looked dingy because the mattress cover was so sheer, but it was actually comfortable, and the soft comforter smelled good. Nobody was at reception, so I called the website number and a staff member came downstairs right away. Overall, it was alright.

The helpful staff responded promptly to my messages before and during the stay. When the elevator was out of service on arrival, the host arranged for someone to carry up my luggage, which I appreciated. I wish I’d been told ahead of time, though. I have knee issues, and walking up four flights was hard. I chose the place because it’s within walking distance of points of interest, shops, restaurants, and pretty much everything. The room had a well-equipped kitchenette. The bathroom wasn’t comfortable for me or what I’m used to, though I realize others may be fine with it. Since it was just one night, I stayed, and I still rated the overall service highly.

The location is close to downtown, and the beds were mostly clean and comfortable, with bug-free weighted blankets. The room was warm, maybe too warm, but still much better than outside. Everything else was terrible. Bugs were on the walls and floors, mostly in the bathroom, and the whole hotel, including our room, was filthy. The sewage smell hit us at the back door and got much worse in the room. The bathroom was the worst, in a very small room, with mold and two overpowering diffusers. The water smelled like rotten eggs, so we bought bottled water for brushing our teeth to avoid the taste. We were sweating from the heat, and that covered some of the smell, as did our concern about smelling like eggs or body odor. The advertised TV didn’t work once plugged into the ceiling. Reception was never open when we had complaints. Other reviews say the elevator had been out of order for over a year. We stayed two days and would have changed hotels if we’d stayed longer. If you just need a bed near the center, go for it, but find somewhere else if you want to shower or relax.
