Breakfast was such a good start to the day, fresh local food and staff who made us feel welcome. Everyone was attentive throughout our stay, and the hotel views are sensational. The rooms and caves have been restored remarkably close to their original state. Modern things like hot water and Wi-Fi are there, but fridges and other items are tucked away, and everything feels tastefully arranged. It’s probably one of the most unusual hotels you could stay in, and in many ways the best I’ve ever been to. Highly recommended.

The breakfast, served in a 13th-century rock-cut church, was a real highlight. The ricotta, burrata, and homemade breads were delicious and locally sourced, and the waitstaff were warm and attentive. The hotel sits opposite the Gravina canyon, with breathtaking views across the golden, cave-dotted Sassi. Its historic setting and cultural depth make this *albergo diffuso* a memorable choice for people who love history. Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita has 18 cave rooms carved into ancient tufa rock, reflecting Matera’s Paleolithic origins. Daniele Kihlgren and David Chipperfield restored the spaces with care, preserving the rough cave walls and using minimalist decor to evoke Basilicata’s heritage. Candlelight gives the interiors a magical, timeless feel, though the dim lighting and uneven floors could be difficult for some guests. Maintenance is meticulous, but the air conditioning is inconsistent. The open layout lets non-guests pass through, which seriously limits privacy and makes it harder to relax. Access is by foot through stepped alleys, so it isn’t suitable for small children or elderly guests. Some rooms have Philippe Starck bathtubs, and the rooms seem better suited to a short, immersive stay than a long vacation. The dark, humid interiors and limited seclusion may not work for people looking for modern comforts. Sextantio is an unforgettable adventure if you’re happy to embrace its quirks. In October 2025.

Breakfast was unbelievable, fresh and artisanal, and so good I seriously thought about staying another night just to have it again. I stayed in the Bridal Suite-Cave 13, which is multi-level and beautifully designed. It’s one of the most unique rooms I’ve ever stayed in, and I can’t recommend it enough. Matera is a gem, and staying here made it feel even more magical. The property is stunning and unlike anywhere else, but the hospitality is what made the biggest difference. Communication was clear when I arrived, and the staff made me feel at home. They added wood to the fire in my room, carried all my bags, and let me relax in the common area after checkout because my train was late. They also surprised me with an upgrade since it was a quieter night. Such a thoughtful gesture, and it made an already incredible stay even better. I’m completely in love with this place and will talk about it forever. Highly, highly recommend.

The staff were wonderful, clearly proud of the place, and took time to explain the project. Hearing about it gave us an even greater appreciation for the chance to stay here. The breakfast spread was impressive, and the cathedral where it’s served is quite something. The bed was cozy, the shower spacious, and the linens were plush, especially the fluffy bathrobes. The toiletries were top quality, with handcrafted goats’ milk soap, and the fruit bowl looked so lovely we thought it was fake decoration. Candles placed around the room made the lighting feel romantic. We would have liked a more private toilet setup in cave 20, though it did add to the authenticity. What an experience!
