Affreschi Su Roma B & B

The Affreschi is a quirky set of rooms on the second floor of an old building on Zanardelli, and we loved it. The location was fabulous, and we walked to many places of interest. Our room wasn’t huge, but the bed was, and both were comfortable. The shower was hot, the air conditioning kept things cool, and the Wi-Fi worked. The room was made up and the whole place cleaned every day. Breakfast was good, and there was endless coffee in the nearby breakfast room, just a few steps away, with a balcony. The owner communicated promptly and helpfully.

The location is great, but avoid this place if you’re traveling with small children. They don’t provide a kettle, so there was no clean water for our baby and we had to use water from the coffee machine. Our child got sick with a high temperature, and the holiday was ruined. There’s no high chair in the dining room, and the elevator is so small that a stroller won’t fit, so carrying it up to the third floor can be exhausting.

The rooms were pretty spacious for Rome, and the central location made it easy to get around on foot. What stood out most was the staff. Led by Gabrielle, they were friendly and approachable, with great suggestions for restaurants and things to do. They also arranged transport and trips, and nothing seemed like too much trouble. We liked it so much that we changed our accommodation so we could stay again when we return to Rome to fly home.

The breakfast wasn’t really our thing. We’re used to breakfast without cakes and sweet marmalade, the meat smelled unpleasant to us even though the people at the next table ate it, and the only bread was stale white bread with no alternatives. We prefer the kind restaurants serve as appetizers, with a crunchy crust and soft middle. Maybe that’s just a difference in taste with Italians. The coffee was good, though. The staff were friendly and smiling, communication was great, and the clean room had charming antique (?) furniture. It was relatively quiet, facing the back streets.
