After nine trips to Italy and stays at some great hotels, the Radisson Blu has been my favorite. It’s a gorgeous place, with marble floors and a lovely lobby, and the modern rooms were well equipped. Ours was small by US standards, but just right for us. The breakfast spread was big and varied. There seemed to be lots of Asian guests, so there were several Asian options too, which I tried and liked. The management was pleasant and accommodating, and we enjoyed the rooftop bar and its amazing view. I was traveling with 31 high school students and needed a spot for a brief ceremony. They let us use the lobby bar, even though it was closed. The one drawback is the distance from the main attractions, but the local bus stop is just around the corner, so we could get around easily.

The shuttle drivers and breakfast team were extremely helpful, and breakfast itself was plentiful, hot, excellent, and had healthy choices. There was also an informative, visually stunning slideshow playing without sound. You could hear people saying, “Oh, I want to see that today!” The problems started when we returned from a shuttle trip to the Spanish Steps. We’d left our luggage in a supposedly secure meeting room, but found people wandering around in there. The email we were promised when our room was ready never arrived. After checking in, staff pointed us toward the room and left us to find it ourselves. We opened the door to what was supposed to be a Superior Room, only to find a tiny room with two single beds. A porter then opened the door to bring luggage in with two more people. We all laughed, but at the front desk they said there’d been a mix-up and it was the wrong room. The replacement was even smaller, with a double bed barely big enough for us, despite our request for a king. We were told it was all they had. It was also a wheelchair accessible room with a large walk-in shower, and using it flooded the rest of the bathroom. There was nowhere around the sink for our toiletry bags, so they sat on the floor soaking up water. When I raised this, the front desk said they’d send extra towels. On our first night, a porter near the desk was happy to bring me a bag of ice. On the second, I was told there wasn’t any, and that I could try the rooftop bar. That wasn’t service. The only nice thing at the front desk was the candy on the counter. I was there often enough to have a few to make delivering more bad news easier. My wife and I had planned our Italy trip for over a year, using a cruise to visit cities and decide where we’d like to return for longer. We spent a few days in Venice before our Norwegian Cruise Ship, then booked two nights in Rome through Norwegian at the Radisson Blu GHR. We arrived around 10 a.m., before check-in, and were welcomed, checked in, and told our bags would be safe in the meeting room until our room was ready. While we waited, we took the free hotel shuttle. The drivers dropped us near the Spanish Steps, picked us up at the agreed time, and gave helpful sightseeing advice. We’d return to Rome, but probably not to this property. Front desk staff should welcome guests and guide them, rather than point fingers and tell them where to go.

We stayed three nights. The rooms were clean and the beds comfortable, but noise from the road and corridors was too loud. They moved us from the second floor to the sixth, which fixed the outside noise. The hotel was good, though I wouldn’t give it five stars in any area. At breakfast, service was poor and they ran out of crockery, so they brought paper cups and even suggested using them for yoghurt because there were no bowls left. It’s next to a metro station, which is handy, but the sites aren’t easy to reach on foot. Apparently there’s a shuttle to the centre, though it isn’t advertised well. We only learned about it at checkout.

The staff were amazing, the rooms clean, and both the breakfast and coffee were delicious. I also booked our airport transfer through the hotel and highly recommend doing that. It’s near a lovely park, coffee shops, a pharmacy, and more. I couldn’t have asked for a better hotel in Rome.

The location was inconvenient, with tourist spots 15-20 minutes away by car. They had a shuttle, but I wouldn’t advise relying on it. We also had a terrible experience at Le Roof Restaurant. Four staff were around and it wasn’t very busy, but nobody came to take our order for 20 minutes, even though we asked several times. We eventually left and went to bed hungry. Our room was dusty and too small for two suitcases. The top sheet, or comforter, was uncomfortable, the shower head was filthy, and the bathroom door and tile were broken. WiFi was very poor, the lifts were slow, and nobody answered when we called reception. The staff were rude and didn’t greet us. We’re regulars at Radisson properties, but this was the worst stay we’ve had. It wasted our money and vacation. After we complained, the devils turned into angels, but that’s not what we expect from a Radisson. The most awful Radisson stay ever. One word: pathetic.
