We visited St Peter's Basilica, Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican all in one day, and you need the full day for it. Buy tickets online in advance. I’d also suggest skip-the-line tickets, since we nearly melted in the sun.

Prebook tickets or book a tour to save yourself a lot of aggravation. Tours can get you ahead in line, though the pace may be quick and you could miss a few things. The day-of ticket line is extremely long, and tickets sell out regularly. It was a great experience, I loved it.
