The hot water was good for bathing, so it would be a comfortable stay in cold weather. The onsen, though, was closed on Sunday and only opened from 5pm. The hotel was unmanned, which was unsettling when we arrived after sunset and couldn't work out how to check in. We had to drag our heavy luggage across the road to the other hotel, about five minutes away, then haul it back after getting the key. With the bags, that five minutes felt like fifteen.

The room is spacious and well equipped, and the foot massager was really nice. I liked the big TV too, though it should face the bed. You get a sunrise view from the room, and the location is good, close to the station, so there is some train noise. Check-in means going to the station hotel. The bento breakfast is available, but I thought it was expensive.

I booked this for my first trip to Japan, and it didn't feel very hospitable. There was nothing in the refrigerator, so I had to go out to buy bottled water. Check-in was unmanned, but there hadn't been any notice of that when I reserved. At Hanamizuki, Hotel and Spa, I found a notice on the front door telling me to go to Shimabara Station Hotel. I had to walk back there with my heavy backpack. After the front desk checked my passport, the front desk lady gave me a sheet of paper with the entrance door number and room number. Then I had to return to the hotel I'd booked.

The public bath was good, and the location worked well, with parking lots near Shimabara castle.
