We liked being a little outside the busiest part of Shinjuku. It was quieter and seemed cleaner, while still close enough to Shinjuku station for getting around. There’s a McDonald's next door too, handy for a late snack or morning coffee. The rooms are smaller than the one we’d had at the Kyoto Tokyu Stay, which was the best hotel I’d ever stayed in, but that felt understandable for Tokyo. We still found Tokyu Stay Nishi-Shinjuku very good, and the washer/dryer was a big plus for us. They left us a sweet little note after I mentioned it was our honeymoon. Check-in was easy, but help from staff depended on who was working. One person couldn’t help us ship our luggage to Osaka and said we’d have to book it through Airporter, which didn’t do cross-region shipping. A woman on a later shift sorted it out for us without any trouble. There was a hair inside a bathroom cup, though, which was pretty gross and made us wonder about the room’s cleanliness. I’d stay here again and recommend it, but they could pay closer attention to details and make sure staff can help guests.

At about €130 a night, you get a compact room with a double bed, air conditioning and a washing machine. Drying clothes takes a bit of improvising because there isn’t much space. The room was clean, and the bathroom was a little dated but perfectly fine. The hotel is handy for getting around, with the bus station and Nishi-Shinjuku-Gochome Metro Station nearby. Shinjuku Station is walkable too, about 30 minutes away. Facilities are basic, with no breakfast restaurant or spa, and the focus is on clean, practical rooms. It works well for a short Tokyo stay if convenience matters, whether you’re traveling or here for business.

The bed duvet was my biggest letdown, and the aircon/heating unit made enough noise to bother me when trying to sleep in such a small room. The bed itself was okay, and while the room was the smallest I’ve ever stayed in, it was manageable. That size seems pretty standard for Tokyo, so I’m not holding it against them. What did bother me was the dirt and dust under the bed and in a few tucked-away spots. I noticed it after dropping my ring and looking underneath. You don’t usually see those places, but you still breathe that dust in. Room cleaning was awkward too, since they only clean once a week. My girlfriend left her top on the bed, and instead of moving the small item to the chair, they left a note saying they hadn’t made the bed because something was on it. That seemed a silly amount of effort for a note. It’s a nice little hotel, but those things brought it down for me.

During my six-night stay, they changed the towels each day, but never cleaned the room once. I’ve never had a hotel skip room cleaning for an entire stay that long, and for what I paid, the service was a real disappointment. If I’d known beforehand that the room wouldn’t be cleaned, I would have booked an Airbnb instead. It would have been better value.

The included breakfast was worth having. The room was nicely decorated and well equipped, even with an area for preparing meals, though the square footage was small as usual.
