Mega Inn

The toilet was blocked and hard to flush, and the wash basin was so close to the right wall that washing my face and brushing my teeth were difficult. There were mosquitoes in the room and ants on the bed. Also, the inn has no parking of its own. Guests have to park on the uncovered ground in the Kuching City Government lot and pay the parking fee.

The low room rates are a big plus. Membership costs only RM20 and gets you RM10 off per night, so Mega Inn can work well for budget travellers. The hotel was clean, and the receptionists were friendly and helpful. We did our laundry next door, which was very convenient. It’s a small, unassuming motel made up of a few four-storey shoplots. I found it after most mid-priced hotels had filled up for the long gawai holidays. The old, unattractive exterior and awkward location might put people off at first. There are eateries nearby serving local cuisines, including one open 24/7, as well as pharmacies and a laundry. There are a limited number of room types for solo travellers, couples, or families. Rooms are decently equipped and sufficiently furnished, though rather old, and there’s hot water for showers. The walls are thin, so it may not suit anyone looking for a quiet, private stay. On top of that, the cleaners and housekeepers were noisy and didn’t show much courtesy toward guests who were still sleeping. There are plenty of street parking spaces around the hotel, but the local council charges for parking.

The room didn’t match what was advertised, and the service was bad. The toilet was dirty, while the air conditioner stayed warm even at 16 and made a loud noise. A very bad inn.

For Muslim travellers, there’s only one halal restaurant in this area, and the stalls downstairs all serve pork meals. The bathroom was suffocatingly small, and getting a comfortable hot and cold water balance was difficult. There was also a little cockroach, so cleanliness may be poor. The space was just right for two, though the decor might bother you. For walk-in guests, the price definitely didn’t feel worth it.
