Hananui Lodge and Apartments

We picked a two-bedroom unit to be as close to the beach as possible, and the location really is magical. You’re almost on the beach, with only a narrow road and walkway between, and everything in small Russell is close by. It was so peaceful and quiet, and we were lucky to have perfect weather for our three nights. The older apartments are spotless and impeccably maintained, though not large. Ours had double beds only. We’ll stay here again next time we’re in Russel.

We left early, disappointed, although Russell itself is gorgeous. Accommodation is limited, and we booked late. We’d stayed here before Covid and still think the original waterfront building has one of the best locations in Russell. The newer apartments are across the road. The older ones were booked, and the remaining apartment didn’t appeal because it had no private outdoor space. Nev and Celine welcomed us warmly. Our apartment at the top had a view across the street, and it was spacious, very clean, and had a great kitchen. But the bed was thin, with scratchy linen and an electric blanket you could feel underneath. When I asked about a topper, I was told they couldn’t get one and that it was a ‘quality mattress’. It really wasn’t. Our backs were killing us after two nights. The deck was much smaller than expected, cramped, with very little view because of the high railing. The deck below looked slightly better. From around 2 or 3 o’clock it got roasting hot with no protection, so we couldn’t stretch out or relax there. The new building also didn’t have adequate sound insulation. We heard other guests and their children running around, jumping, banging doors, and crying. With the awful bed too, we didn’t get much sleep. One more precaution, the shower floor is incredibly slippery. This place is very popular, so my review may not be welcome, but accommodation costs a lot these days and we were disappointed to leave early. Hananui wasn’t what we’d hoped for.

We appreciated all the attention to detail in units 2 & 3. It blew a gale for two days, but the units faced diagonally to the breeze, so the patios were still quite pleasant. Your accommodations were delightful. We’re guests from Pukenui and North Carolina.

The beach is only steps away, and everything in town is an easy walk from Hananui. We thought the price was great for that location. Our room was spotless and thoughtfully arranged, check-in was easy, and the staff were so kind and helpful. It was a lovely, cozy place to stay, and we'd happily recommend it.
