Alton House Hotel

There was still no hot water in the morning, and after I was allowed to shower in a different room, I saw that the others were in just as bad a state. I left as quickly as I could and skipped breakfast because the rooms were so dirty and old that I didn't trust the kitchens. I arrived Tuesday at 1 pm to check in before a wedding starting at 2. I explained the timing and pleaded to be let into any room, but the man at reception said none would be available until 2 pm. He had a smirk on his face as he told me. When I got back later, there was no hot water. The room became freezing overnight because the windows weren't double glazed and the wooden blinds were broken. The room itself was awful: stained sheets, broken blinds, a dirty, damaged headboard and seating, and stains everywhere. There was no hot water either. The hotel is HORRENDOUS. Don't be fooled by the pictures. Alton House Hotel was AWFUL.

Issy helped the day run smoothly, thank you. We held a small wedding reception on the 2nd of January and it was just perfect. The buffet was really exceptional, and even the garden looked stunning in January.

The receptionist suggested the hash browns, even though I don't usually like them, and they were very good. Breakfast was tasty and well cooked. I've stayed three times now and found the hotel friendly, with a good location and very decent facilities. I'd like to come back for longer than my stays so far.

The hotel was in an ideal spot for our plans, and the staff were a plus, but the room and its upkeep really affected my stay. I'd called ahead with a special request and was assured it would be arranged, but it hadn't been done when I arrived. The room had outdated furniture, a tiny TV that was hard to see from bed, and an awkwardly placed dressing table mirror. There were cracks in the ceiling, peeling lining paper, and stains that clearly showed evidence of an earlier leak. In the bathroom, the bath had a hole, and excess silicone around the overflow drain had visible mould. The carpet didn't look properly vacuumed, and the window was cracked. At 4 AM, noise from next door woke me. I could hear someone showering through the walls, and it went on for 35 minutes. I stayed one night.
