Village Hotel Portsmouth

I stay here for work regularly. The sports bar, gym and coffee shop keep the place busy and buzzing, and the staff are always fantastic, friendly and helpful. The rooms are a little small, but the beds are comfortable and the en-suite is a good size.

At a conference here with about 120 other guests, Callum looked after us throughout. He worked relentlessly to keep the whole event running smoothly, and we felt supported the entire time. His commitment to his employer is rare, and he's a credit to Village Hotel and the team around him. I only tend to review places or people when the service is exceptional, and this was. Thank you.

The staff at check-in and in the bar were brilliant, friendly and polite. The food was really good, breakfast included, and the location was perfect for the work we needed to do that weekend. The hotel has good facilities, but I probably wouldn't stay again after this experience. My room was grim. The bed had been made, but it clearly hadn't been changed before I checked in: there were hairs and stains on the sheet. The light switch beside the bed was broken and grimy, and the USB ports there didn't work. There was also a lot of visible mould where the wall meets the ceiling above the bed. I'm a mould consultant and was in Portsmouth to do work at a site about 15 minutes away, so I can certainly identify it. Being below the gym also meant I was woken around 6am, which wasn't ideal. My colleagues' room was fine, so mine was clearly not clean before I arrived. Looking at other reviews, I can imagine the company will give the usual reply about passing this to the team and taking it on board. But my room was a grim place to stay, and based on my experience I'd stay somewhere else.

The hotel was in a perfect spot and easy to find. My room was really nice and clean, and the service stayed excellent throughout my recent business trip. I had a fantastic stay and will definitely be back.
