Hyatt Place Greenville/Haywood

We liked the location, close to Haywood Mall and not far from downtown, and enjoyed our stay. The room was a spacious king, and the views from the fourth floor were nice, though we’d requested a first floor room by phone because of the elevator reviews. The bathroom was very small, and the TV had no streaming options. The elevators were quite slow and felt a little unsafe, but we had no problems using them. At check-in, the employee was a bit curt when we asked whether we’d be charged the full amount at the desk. I’d given my card details while booking and thought I’d paid then. The same confusion had happened at another hotel the night before, where the employee checked and saw we’d already paid, so we just wanted to make sure. The woman at checkout was kind.

Accountability is something this hotel lacks. My review is accurate, and I can provide more dates if needed. If the photos aren’t visible, I stayed Nov 18th, Dec, 20th, Dec, 8th, Jan. 19, Jan 28, and more. I used to stay here often, but the quality has dropped enough that I’ve moved to places like Embassy Suites and Comfort Suites, where service and cleanliness are better. I would have stayed loyal if management had made an effort to improve. Instead, upper management responded with confrontation and indifference, and focused on my feelings instead of finding solutions. The property is poorly maintained, with dirty or broken facilities. The elevators have been unreliable and broken for months, room coffee machines don’t work, and both glasses have been dirty. The bathroom doors are a safety hazard. Front desk staff often seem busy on their phones, and breakfast is stale and unappealing. Servers have needed multiple requests for basic items and still weren’t responsive. I’ve been trying not to post about this, but I feel I have to say this is the worst Hyatt location I’ve encountered. I’m now enjoying a newer, cleaner hotel with amenities like microwaves. There are too many options nearby for this place to neglect guests. Surely all the reviews can’t be the same. If management cared more, they wouldn’t keep replying to the same complaints and reviews.

The staff were amazing, and the hotel and our modern, spacious room were spotless. The beds and pillows were really soft and comfortable, and the shower was hot and soothing. Breakfast was great, and checkout at 12:00 pm was a plus. I’d give it 10 out of 10. Only little issue was there was no shower gel in the shower.

I arrived exhausted from the Amtrak around 5:30 am, but the room was so bad I knew I couldn’t stay. It smelled like sweat and wet dogs, and the heat made that worse. I saw a lot of dogs in the hotel. My elderly parents were unhappy too. When I pulled back the covers, I found hair all through the bed, including blonde hairs under the pillows. There was other people’s hair in the bathroom and on the soap and shampoo pumps, and the bathroom was rusty. The couch was filthy under visible layers of dirt, and I honestly hope the marks weren’t bedbugs. I didn’t want to touch anything. Hair is where I draw the line. The lobby walls were dirty, and the elevator area wasn’t any better. One elevator was broken, while the other was painfully slow, rattled and jumped at every floor, and had tape around its frame. It felt unsafe. I couldn’t believe the condition of the place. People saying it was good must be staff or paid contributors. Their idea of clean doesn’t match ordinary expectations, and I wasn’t about to eat breakfast there. I also found the front desk agent sketchy looking and they basically asked what I was doing there. I left and booked with Spring Hill Suites by Marriott, which was night and day. It was upscale, with resort-like grounds and decor, a modern, carefully sanitized and exceptionally clean room, and a high-end bar with a three-piece band including a cello. I listened for hours from a hanging seat, walked into town nearby for ice cream, and my parents felt like royalty when we arrived. It was only $100 more. I was ready to pay for valet as a treat after the ordeal, but they offered complimentary valet for handicapped guests, and lots of high net worth people were using valet. As we left, Hyatt Place was holding a staff meeting in front of guests about the unsanitary conditions and the need to improve. I don’t know whether to be glad or concerned. I hope this review makes Hyatt Place check its standards and keeps people from going through the same awful experience.
