After driving from Santa Fe that morning, we got to KC close to 10, exhausted. My family and I had had good stays at Wyndham properties around the country, so we took a chance on this Days Inn. Outside, there was garbage and cigarette butts everywhere. Inside, the room smelled strongly of chemical cleaner, and there were chip crumbs on the nightstand and floor. There was only one bath towel, no hairdryer, and the door and bathroom ceiling were in poor shape. The beds seemed okay, but we didn't trust the breakfast and left as soon as we could the next morning. My oldest daughter wanted me to ask for another room, but after seeing the exterior, we figured they might all be like that. My wife also worried that reporting the room could get a staff member in trouble for something another person had done. At checkout, I told the woman at the desk about some of our concerns. She looked frustrated, asked for my card, and gave us a 10% refund. I later shared what happened with Wyndham corporate, and they gave us 3,000 reward points.
Our room was in good shape, but the pool was closed with its cover still on, and breakfast was sparse and never replenished while it was supposed to be available. The staff were rude. On the first night, the room type we booked wasn't available, so they put us elsewhere and said to come back the next day for a key to the right room. When we did, they refused and made us stay in the first room. On day three, someone stopped me on the way to our room and asked which room we were in. They said nobody was assigned there, so I had to show my key. Then, on our last day, while we were still moving our things out, a maintenance worker entered and started stripping the bed, even moving some of our belongings. I'm really upset with how we were treated.
At least it was quiet, but the room wasn't clean. The toilet handle was broken, so it ran all night, and the tub wouldn't hold water. There were tiny gnats in the room. If it hadn't been so late, I would've asked for my money back. They call it non-smoking, yet there were ashes on the nightstand, not even in an ashtray.
For a one-night stop on our Kansas road trip, the stay was okay. We accidentally booked a smoking room, but the front desk quickly moved us to a non-smoking one. The beds were fairly comfortable, though the AC was hard to control and kept changing. Thin walls let in some noise, and a ceiling tile was missing above the shower. The breakfast choices were mediocre, the juice machine didn't work, and the TV remote had dead batteries. None of it was a disaster, but it wasn't a great stay either.
We booked a non-smoking room, but the first one smelled strongly of smoke and was very dirty. At the desk, I was told they could put in a carbon filter, which might help after an hour. I asked to move instead, and they gave us another room. It still smelled smoky, though less than the first. The comforter and sheets had lots of ash burns and stains, and smelled awful. In the bathroom, the toilet paper holder had been torn off the wall and left on the counter, and there was mold in the floor and shower cracks. Breakfast was biscuits and gravy, but the biscuits were hard and the gravy tasted gross. This was a bad experience at Days Inn, and I'll probably never book one again.
