Hyatt Place Memphis/Germantown

The front desk staff were very nice and the location was great. The room felt a little rough around the edges, especially the bathroom, and the walls were thin enough that I could hear my neighbors snoring and using the bathroom. The Wi-Fi was painfully slow, so I couldn't get any work done.

I only just checked in and I'm here until Sunday, but the place already feels perfect. The room, the location, and the young man with blonde hair have all been great. The pictures and reviews don't do it justice. I've stayed at higher-end hotels in downtown Memphis, and this is better than any of them. If you're in Memphis, try the Germantown location. The front desk guy is a real asset, friendly with everyone, and gave me great directions.

The room was clean and comfortable, and every staff member we met was friendly and helpful. Kiyona at the front desk went out of her way to make our stay pleasant, the customer service was exceptional. The one big drawback was no microwave in the room, so we had to go downstairs whenever we wanted to heat food.

I made the reservation through a third-party app at work. I usually stay at Hilton, but couldn't find an available room at a reasonable rate, so I chose this Hyatt. At the desk, the man told me the total and explained there'd be a $30 deposit refunded after checkout, then asked me to tap my card. It was declined. He thought it might be a system issue and had me insert it, but that was declined too. I called American Express. They said there was no attempted Hyatt charge showing, and their test hotel charge of $500 went through without a problem. They found no freeze or unusual activity that could've blocked the card. I told the man, who had blonde wavy hair and whose name I didn't get, that the card was fine. Another guest nearby said a young woman at the front desk had needed five swipes to get his card to work and had the same trouble. I asked if there was a manual way to charge mine. He tried the same terminal again, then was going to restart the computer before deciding to try another terminal. He needed the young woman working in back to give him her login, and they joked about him using her sign-in or her coming up front while I waited. The other terminal declined the card twice as well. He went to the back without saying what he was doing, while another customer waiting to pay for a snack got frustrated by the delay and left. When he came back, he said his manager thought the CVV might be the problem. I'd used the card all day without trouble, so I didn't think it was the card. If he'd entered the number manually, I could understand a typo being possible. He said, rather casually, that he was sorry. I asked him to cancel the reservation and booked a room at Hilton instead. The card worked fine when I checked in there. I won't book this hotel again.
