Tru by Hilton Charleston Airport

I'm staying at Tru by Hilton now, and the experience has been very disappointing. They don't clean the rooms regularly, the staff seem unconcerned about guest service, and even two bottles of water a day aren't provided. Bottled water costs unreasonably much here. For the same budget, I'd strongly recommend Marriott, where the service and overall experience are far better.

We picked this hotel for a family work and vacation trip, and the location was great. The service was good and the beds were comfortable and clean, but the restroom needed attention. The shower walls had dirty streaks and mold around the edge, the blackout shade didn't work, a lamp was broken, and we had to deal with a cockroach. At breakfast, some of the machines or dispensers weren't working.

The staff were especially kind and helpful when an appointment ran late and we needed a few extra minutes both to get into the room and to check out. Breakfast was great for a free meal, with the usual cereal, bread, pancakes, sausage, and eggs. The location worked well for our trip, just down the road from the mall and many places we needed to visit. The room was smaller than I expected, though there were only two of us and we were mainly there to sleep. It fits the minimal style I see in newer hotels. The luggage storage wasn't the usual dresser and closet setup, so a longer stay might mean living out of a suitcase. We'd consider staying here on another short trip to the area.

My first time at Tru by Hilton was pleasant overall, and I'd stay again if I came back to Charleston. I liked that it was outside downtown but still close to it and other places to explore. The hotel was nice and clean, the room was clean, the bed was fine, and the price was great. The TV greeting said, "Greetings, Grace," when I entered, a nice hospitality touch. I also appreciated the posted quiet hours and felt safe in the room. A few things could use attention. The tiny light switches were hard to find and use. The curtain switches didn't work properly, or may not have been programmed right, and the cords showing between the curtains and lights looked clunky and untidy. The bathroom was roomy, but the soap tubes were so hard to squeeze that even though I'm young and strong, I struggled to imagine an older person managing them. I didn't need the handicap chair, but used it to hold a few things, and found it very hard to fold down and push back up. I could see that being a struggle for an older or handicapped guest. There was also another door in the room that I assumed connected to the next room. It was locked with an extra lock, but I would've liked someone to explain it beforehand.
