Monterey Peninsula Inn

The manager told me there was nothing they could do, which was disappointing. I’d booked two rooms for a family trip and knew about the seven-day cancellation policy. The night before we were due to arrive, an unprecedented rainstorm brought flood warnings across the region. I tried calling the hotel but got no answer, so I left a message on the website. Later, someone told me the property had lost power. I still hoped to make the trip and asked to move the reservation two days later, but the heavy rain and scattered flooding continued, making travel difficult and potentially unsafe. I reluctantly canceled altogether. Given those circumstances, I’d hoped for some flexibility or consideration for the first-night deposit on both rooms, especially at a husband-and-wife-owned boutique property. I understand policies, but I expected better judgment and hospitality in an unusual situation. This might work for travelers with fixed plans and ideal conditions, but I’d hesitate to book again if flexibility and consideration for guests matter to you.

This cute inn has been our only place to stay in the area for years, and it never disappoints. My family and I always have the best time. The location is perfect, the rooms are clean and comfortable, and the staff are amazing. My kids also love going to see the cutest office dog. I can't recommend the place enough!

We ended up missing my daughter's 14th birthday after she and I both got sick and couldn't travel. I had booked this hotel in advance for the weekend, planning to take her and some close friends to Monterey pier and the aquarium. When I canceled, they charged the full room price. I thought I could explain what happened to the manager, but he yelled at me and said, “How dare I try to break their hotel policy!” That’s really bad customer service, and it’s awful that someone with that attitude is running the place. I’d give it minus stars if I could. Sharing this as a warning before anyone decides to stay here.

The woman at check-in was kind and accommodating, but that was the only good part of our stay. The cabin was in extremely poor shape. It was dirty when we arrived, with visible mold in several places and bugs in the kitchenette. The refrigerator barely worked and froze over whatever we put inside. Room attendants reused dirty linens, and the floors were never properly cleaned. It was clear the space hadn't been maintained for some time. My mother got sick during our stay, likely from the mold and general filth. We tried reaching the front desk, but there was no answer or the office was closed. We would have checked out early if we'd been able to get hold of anyone. Afterward, we tried several times to contact the hotel about our concerns and got no response. We also contacted Expedia, where we had booked, and even they couldn't reach anyone for nearly a week. When someone finally replied, they refused a refund or compensation, citing a “loophole” related to third-party bookings. This place is poorly maintained, unprofessional, and unresponsive, with no concern for guest health or satisfaction. If they'd worked with us to resolve even part of the problem, I might not have needed to write this. Don't stay here if cleanliness, customer service, or your health matter to you.
