Ms. Tracy at the front desk was the one bright spot. She was kind and pleasant, and brought an extra blanket all the way to our room on the far side of the hotel. The rest of the stay went downhill. I arrived before my 4 p.m. check-in, which usually isn’t a problem at Best Western hotels given my Diamond Select status. The desk told me they were busy cleaning and wouldn’t check me in unless I paid a $30 early check-in fee. I could usually live with that, but then we came back later and were greeted by cigarette butts all over the ground outside our room, so much for needing extra cleaning time. The room was tiny, with a desk chair like a torture device, burned out bathroom bulbs, a sink stopper sitting loose in the sink, and no hair dryer. The TV was smaller than my computer monitor. Ice machines didn’t work except for one in a vending area that required a key card. For somewhere calling itself historic, this place has seen better days. I’d rather spend a couple more dollars at a place down the street that’s worth the price.

The people were nice, breakfast was okay, and the rooms were somewhat clean. But calling the place nostalgic doesn’t change how badly it’s run down. Our room felt unsettling because so much seemed to be falling apart. The alarm clock didn’t work and had missing LEDs, some bulbs were out, there were holes in the bathroom walls and clumps of caulk, broken and missing tiles, and a gap under the front door big enough to see outside. There was even a large dead bug of unknown type on the floor. I wish I could rate it more favorably, but the photos show why I can’t.

The only things that bothered me were the street noise, since my room faced the road and I needed earplugs, the stiff beds, and a mild musty motel smell. Still, the sheets and towels were clean, with no mold or bugs, the shower pressure and temperature were great, and the heater worked well. Check-in was easy even though I’d booked through a third party and felt a bit nervous about that. The front desk staff were friendly, the place was clean, and breakfast was included. There are a few food spots, a flea market, and a coffee shop within walking distance. For a motel, it was about as good as you can get, and I’d probably stay again.

Blue would give this motel five bones. He loves the big grassy patch out back, where we’ve spent hours playing ball, and when we pull up he starts dancing and whining with excitement. The motel is his absolute favorite. He’s not keen on the laminate floors, but he’s trained his humans to bring carpet runners and roll them out every time. We like staying here too. The location is good, and we love that it’s on Route 66.

The customer service was awesome, the cleaning staff came by often, and the outside was kept tidy. It’s a small, motel-style place, definitely older, as you might expect if they tell you Elvis stayed there. The musty smell hit me each day when I walked in, and the beds were worn. It had the feel of a nice but older two-star hotel.
