Dinner at Ador suited the hotel’s formal feel. I had a classic negroni, then octopus carpaccio and a New York strip cooked to order, with asparagus and fries on the side. Prices are high for Sofia, but not surprising in that setting. On a second visit a few days later, the standard was just as good. I also went to the Club evening reception for hot skewers, other hors d'oeuvre, and a nice white wine. The hotel’s standout feature is its cathedral-facing rooms. From the upper floors you look straight at Alexander Nevsky, full frame. I’ve stayed a couple of times, and it’s easy to reach from the airport by metro to Sofia University Sv. Kliment Ohridski. Parliament and the central boulevards are minutes away, making the neighborhood easy to explore. Despite facing the street, the rooms are quiet. The interiors are modern and restrained, with a good desk and sensible lighting for a day’s work. The bed was comfortable. It’s a luxury base in the best position in the city.

The lounge food was a real highlight for me. It’s small, and there isn’t a huge selection, but the quality was outstanding. The sandwiches at lunch and the evening happy-hour dishes were delicious, with a restaurant-like care to them, and the menu changed every day. That kind of thoughtful execution says a lot about the management. My first stay at InterContinental Sofia was a standout among my experiences with IHG in Europe. From check-in through the room, dining, lounge, and amenities, everything felt coordinated and professionally run. InterContinental lounges are rare in Europe, which made this one feel especially worth appreciating. Sedna, Mira, and the rest of the team made the stay even more memorable. They were warm, gracious, and attentive throughout. I’m already looking forward to coming back.

Miraslova and Katerina in the Club Lounge were so kind and friendly. One night Katerina asked what I wanted to drink, and I told her to pick her favorite lemonade. She went beyond that and brought me the hibiscus lemonade from the menu. I told her hibiscus flowers reminded me of when I lived on Okinawa. It was tasty, and brought back a lovely memory. Great service, ladies. Blagodarja! My adopted Neapolitan body still hadn’t adjusted to Bulgaria’s cold rain, so I spent quite a bit of time enjoying my room. I’d been upgraded to one overlooking the church, which looked stunning at any time of day.

I was there for a two-day event, so I can’t say much about the hotel overall. The reception staff were courteous when I arrived and offered complimentary drinks before the event. I can only assume that same professionalism carries over to hotel guests. What I did see directly was the bathroom on the hall’s floor. Even with the area packed, it was spotless, which says a lot about the attention to cleanliness.

The staff were helpful, though they all seemed quite stern and serious, so they didn’t come across as very friendly. The rooms are lovely, and the location is great: a minute from Sofia cathedral and about 15 minutes from the shopping area.
