For $70 a night, the room might be okay if all you need is a bed. It was quiet, but I wouldn’t book it again. The temperature was 76 degrees, and even after we set it to 68, it was so hot we opened the window at 4 a.m. By then it was -14 outside and the room was finally bearable. Thin curtains also let the light in from the hotel across the lot all night. The shower curtain had layers of pink mold, and the shower head was held together with a face cloth, spraying water everywhere. There were two of us and only one set of towels. When we asked for another, they questioned why we needed more. The towels were see-through, and sharing one between two people was silly. There was no bath mat either. The fridge was larger than a bar fridge, and there was a Roku TV, but the right button didn’t work, so we couldn’t sign into Netflix. There was a kettle on the microwave, but no cups, tea or coffee. The beds were okay. We looked under the mattress and saw the bed skirt tucked far underneath, which made me wonder when anyone had last checked under there. We kept our bags off the floor as a precaution.

The most alarming part was waking in the middle of the night to find someone had walked into our room. He apologized and left. The next morning, the front desk said he’d been given the wrong room key and apologized, but nothing was done to make things right. We were told the $150 deposit would be returned in 24 hours. What was that deposit even for? I’ll never stay there again. We’d booked hoping for a clean room and a good night’s rest before my surgery in the morning. Instead, the floors and tabletop were sticky, and the sheets had hair and dirt on them. There were only two towels, one stained, a face cloth and no bath mat. I needed to shower before surgery. The tub’s paint was peeling, there was a water stain on the sagging ceiling tile above it, and pinkish soap was stuck to the back shower tile. When I turned on the hot water, it sprayed over me. I tried to push in the shower spigot to stop it, and the hot-water knob fell off. My partner had to help with the cold tap because it was too tight to move. Without a bath mat or spare towel, the floor was soaked after my shower. Our room was at the back. Cars on both sides of our parking spot and a fence made it too tight to park outside, so we had to park two rooms away. The door wouldn’t open after three tries; on the fourth, I had to shove it. It had been kicked in before, with a split down the middle and a metal plate on the frame. I locked it once we got inside. Seeing that door made me uneasy, so I slept with the curtains open. People were up talking and partying, and headlights from a vehicle outside our window lit up the room. We both had a hard time sleeping.

I paid $143 for a room that hadn’t even been cleaned. The bed wasn’t made, and I had to ask for clean sheets. Even then, the sheet looked used, so I slept on top of the covers. The towels were dirty, so we didn’t shower, and I took out the rubbish myself rather than sleep in a messy room. The so-called free Wi-Fi didn’t work. Afterward I had to threaten them with the RCMP to get my security deposit back. Seedy place.

The room smelled awful, and the odor never let up. The hot water was barely lukewarm. Expedia described the place as pet friendly, with a restaurant and bar attached, but the $100 pet fee is apparently what pet friendly means, and the restaurant and bar are no longer operating. Expedia should update its description. I suppose you get what you pay for, especially with the Ramada right outside the window. Such a disappointment.

It’s a budget inn, not the Ritz, and I honestly don’t know what the bad reviews are about. Each to their own, I guess. I stayed a week before heading back to work. The beds are super comfy, and I haven’t slept that well in ages. It was very clean, with no bugs or critters, not even a spider. A bit noisy now and then, but no big deal. Management was really welcoming and helpful. Be polite, courteous and respectful, and you get the same back. Treat the place like your own home. A continental breakfast bar would be a nice addition, but otherwise it was exactly what I needed. I’ll definitely be back. Thanks. And just to be clear, I’m not a bot or being paid to say anything good or bad, this is just my honest opinion.
