Hôtel Mercure Strasbourg Centre

Housekeeping was unreliable: some days they came very late, and the room barely got cleaned beyond making the bed. One day there was no replacement coffee, the next there was no tea. When we asked for English breakfast tea, they said they had run out and only had green tea. On our last day, even the spoon was missing. The rooms feel very old and worn, the shower was only average, and the hot water kept shifting between hot and cold.

For under 100 euros a night without breakfast, I expected less from a central hotel with air conditioning. The carpets are faded and have seen better days, though they were clean, didn't smell, and didn't bother me. Our room was quiet at night, and the blackout curtains worked really well. The bathroom looked modern, clean, and lovely, but the paper cups felt odd, especially since the hotel talks about avoiding plastic. They also use a wooden stick instead of a spoon. In room 310 there was a safe, kettle, and an empty fridge, which came in handy. The 50 euro deposit seemed strange, since I wasn't sure what there was to steal. My friend and I each booked a room, and we got a warm welcome and were able to check in around 2pm. The rooms were spacious. The location is central, about a five minute walk from the cathedral, with shops and bars nearby. We skipped breakfast because it seemed too expensive, but there are great coffee shops and bakeries all around.

Gerald was really helpful and friendly, but his manager Meriam wasn't respectful toward customers and could learn from her staff, who are much better qualified. I came with my wife. The hotel is well located, though the room carpet was dirty.

The front desk and breakfast staff were friendly and welcoming, which I appreciated. The room, though, had poor cleanliness: the towels were low quality, the walls around the air conditioner were visibly dirty, and the bed looked badly made. I suspect housekeeping didn't clean it that day. The hotel feels badly in need of renovation, with stained carpets and discolored floors throughout. The lobby smelled unpleasant, and I felt uneasy walking barefoot on the carpets. At breakfast I saw small insects crawling on the dining room floor. One chair I sat on also broke, losing a leg. The bed was advertised as a double but was two unsecured single beds pushed together. They shifted apart overnight, leaving an uncomfortable and potentially dangerous gap. The hotel needs a major update and much better cleaning. I can't recommend it in its current state.
