My partner and I stayed over the weekend and came away really unhappy. While we were out for a few hours, staff went into our room and turned off the heating from reception because nobody was there. We’d left the do not disturb sign on the door, so they had no reason to enter. It felt like a serious privacy and security concern, and left us unsettled. If you value your privacy, be aware you may not get it here. Both windows in room 320 were broken and stuck open for two nights. It was windy and raining, and the room was freezing. Staff who came to look said there was nothing they could do because it was “a daytime job that could fall down and hit somebody.” They just closed the blinds and left. They didn’t move us, only gave us another blanket, which my fiancée had to carry up to the third floor herself. Nobody even apologised. We both have disabilities that mean we need to stay warm, and the cold caused us physical pain. While staff were in the room, they knocked over my walking stick and left it on the floor, walking over it on their way out without an apology. Luckily my fiancée was there to pick it up. If I’d been alone, I could have been left without the mobility aid I need. The whole stay was stressful, cold, and disappointing, and the lack of empathy when we complained was completely out of order. Avoid this place, and if you end up in room 320 with broken windows, ask to move. Also, have an extra £100 available, since they charge it to your card before giving you the key as a “pre-authorisation.”

I arrived much too early for check-in on 06/10/2025, eight months pregnant and escaping an abusive partner at the time, with nowhere to go. I only asked Neil if I could sit in the lobby for a few hours and whether there was a public toilet on the ground floor. In less than five minutes, he had sorted a room for me so I could have peace and quiet. What an absolute angel. Neil was kind, friendly, and so professional. He deserves a raise and a promotion.

We booked through Revolut points and paid extra, which made the stay even more disappointing. The room felt neglected and well below standard. It was an accessible room, even though none of us needed one, and I feel for anyone who actually relies on those facilities because the condition was concerning. The floor was visibly dirty, the shower head and toilet hadn’t been cleaned properly, and there wasn’t even a toilet brush. The TV remote didn’t work, so watching TV was impossible, the WiFi kept dropping, the heating barely worked, and the lights flickered.

The rooms were okay, nothing special. We could hear the man upstairs moving around because of the creaky floorboards, and each day there was also shouting from the cleaning staff in the corridor. The hotel itself wasn’t bad, but it gets some basics wrong, enough to put me off coming back. I know Best Western, and you get what you pay for, but I didn’t expect to be charged £10 for checking in an hour early when the hotel was empty. The receptionist confirmed that it was quiet because it was near Christmas, and offered several rooms, so they were ready. I’d just flown in from Germany and paid. They also took a £100 holding fee from my card, saying I’d get it back at checkout. I was annoyed with myself afterwards for forgetting to ask what it was for. There was no minibar, and I’d booked room only. Those £100 holds add up, and don’t work in your favour.

Mo at the front desk was a huge help while I was extending my stay by a couple of nights. Even with the lobby busy, he made sure they matched the best price I found online, which saved me a good bit. The hotel itself is great, with a charming old building in a handy location, comfortable rooms, and breakfast. Very reasonably priced for what you get. I’d absolutely recommend it.
