The rooms have been recently redone and are furnished really nicely. The shared facilities are just as pleasant, and having them available is convenient if you want to save money by making your own meals. A very nice place.

The hot tub under the stars was one of my favorite parts, and a dip in the cold tub was refreshing too. After three nights at The Old School House, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s peaceful, away from the tourist crowds, with lovely countryside views and a real sense of Icelandic rural life. I used it as a base for the South Coast and got to the major sights, from waterfalls to black sand beaches, before returning each evening to a welcoming place to unwind. The renovated rooms were spacious and spotless, each with a private bathroom. They felt like a boutique hotel while still having a cozy homestead feel. There’s also a large communal kitchen and dining area with plenty of equipment for cooking and space to share stories with other travelers. I could even bring my own wine to have with dinner. The hosts were wonderful, friendly and helpful, always ready with local tips or a warm welcome. If you want a tranquil, authentic-feeling stay with access to the South Coast sights and a bit of distance from the crowds, this is a great fit. Five stars!

The surroundings are wonderfully quiet, just right if you want some peace. We loved the covered “indoor terrace,” where we could sit out of the wind and stay dry. The usable kitchen is very well equipped, so making our own meals was easy. Our stay at the old school house was lovely, and the rooms were cozy with tasteful decor.

This was our favorite of the nine places we stayed during our May 2025 Ring Road trip, and our final stop. Magnea was fantastic, made sure we had everything we needed, showed us around, and sat down for a chat. The old school house was clean and cozy, with lovely decor, en-suite bathrooms in every room, and a beautiful garden courtyard. The huge shared kitchen had all the appliances we’d have at home and lots of fridge space. There’s a grocery store just down the street, without needing to turn onto the main road, and Selfoss is only a 15-minute drive away for restaurants. It’s also ideally placed for visiting the golden circle and Reykjavik, with everything around an hour or two away. I’d definitely stay here again.
