It’s very close to the center, by the church and park, and the balcony looks out over part of the cathedral. The man at reception was really friendly, and the place itself looks nice. My room was on the third floor, and getting up there was a challenge. The stairs are uneven and steep, and the spiral staircase feels flimsy and wobbly, so if you have heavy luggage, use the main entrance. The rooms are old, with some very hard beds and pillows, or ones that seem close to falling apart. The bathroom is tiny, and only one of the two showers worked, though the water was hot. It also gets very hot at night; there are just light bulbs and fans.

The rooms are lovely, service is good, and the staff are very attentive.

I went with a friend, and after looking at lots of places to stay, we felt this was the best choice. It was incredibly good value, with clean, safe, cozy spaces. I’d definitely recommend it.

Staying here gives you a real sense of tradition and culture, like many hotels in downtown San Miguel de Allende. It’s a rustic property in a 200-year-old mansion and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These old buildings weren’t made to be hotels, so things can be different from a purpose-built place, though they provide comforts such as comfortable beds while letting you appreciate the historic architecture. The owners work to preserve the heritage within government rules, which means no modern touches, and that can be challenging for visitors. There’s a family atmosphere, a cool climate, and plenty to see nearby: shops, restaurants, terraces, museums, churches, a convent, and a park. The parish church in the main square, surrounded by mariachis, is the main attraction. Traditional ice cream, gardens, and churches made the experience memorable for me. I’d definitely come back.

You can’t beat this hotel’s location. It’s the best.
