The Bolingbroke Hotel

I’ve been coming here for years for the homemade fish pie. It’s appeared in a few different forms, but the cheese sauce always makes me smile, and they include a little bowl of vegetables too. They stick to what they do well, which is probably why the menu hasn’t grown. I’ve attached three photos from different years.

A straightforward good pub, with really nice staff. The food is honest pub food rather than cordon bleu. I like their calves liver, though I wish it were sliced thinner, and their cheesy chips are a good example of the dish.

The food was forgettable pub fare, and the rooms were so basic they felt miserable. Everything seemed dated and worn, with a joyless atmosphere that was more depressing than cosy. I stayed once and regretted it straight away. I won’t return.

We found it easy to get to Stonehenge and Avebury from here, and stayed because it was close to Swindon. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the staff were friendly. Breakfast costs extra, but I thought it was worth paying for. We also had dinner there one evening and enjoyed it. I’m sure we’ll come back.
