I feel for the families staying here for a year or more, with children and no kitchen or laundry machine. This is now a family shelter, not a hotel, and there’s just one housing specialist for the entire building. Babies, pregnant women, and fathers on their own don’t seem to get help from the officials. Families aren’t allowed glass or metal containers for baby food, with no exceptions. The suggestion was to put Stage 2 Gerber applesauce in a plastic bag and take it to the room. Before a Department of Homeless Services inspection, staff hurried to overhaul rooms so it would look like they cared for residents. One day, the maintenance man unexpectedly knocked with putty, paint, and carpentry equipment, but didn’t understand a word of English. He said he had work to do, possibly right above where your baby sleeps, and you’re left hoping it won’t affect your child that night. It isn’t his fault if he’s simply following orders. Staff seem relieved to leave when their shifts end, after sitting on their phones all day. People need a place to call home, and some children have never had one. Their parents are doing their best in an environment that stunts their development. Do better. Count your blessings, and God be with you.

We found the neighborhood unpleasant and didn’t feel comfortable there, although getting to Manhattan was easy. The street-facing room was very noisy, but it was clean and cleaned every day. The sink tap was broken, and the room and hotel could use an upgrade. Breakfast was included in the description, yet it wasn’t available on our first morning. Check-in was pleasant, and the receptionist was kind and upgraded us to a room with a larger bed.

The room was clean, the bed was made and trash taken out each day, and they brought toiletries daily too. The receptionist welcomed us nicely. There was hot water at the bath tap, but not the sink. We were told there was parking in front and behind the hotel, and parking up front worked for our whole stay. After checkout, though, we found a ticket on the car. At first they said it was because I didn’t have a sticker, but my state doesn’t use one. Reading the ticket, I saw it was for street cleaning. The man there said it couldn’t be that because their cars were parked there too, but farther down the street we saw a sign saying no parking Tuesdays from 12am-3am. The hotel should warn guests not to park there on Monday nights.

We booked for two nights at the last minute in New York and got a great price, especially compared with paying $600+ a night. The rooms were nice and clean, though the shower took a while to get hot. Traffic outside was loud, and the walls are thin. On our second night, a group across the hall were yelling and playing loud music at 3am. I called the receptionist, who was very nice and went to speak with them, but they wouldn’t stop. Pretty decent stay overall, but that kept me from giving five stars.

The room looked nice overall, and the bathroom was pleasant enough with basic toiletries. But it was freezing. There was no working heater, just a unit blowing cold air, so I even ironed the bed trying to warm it up. The floor was painfully cold through my socks, almost like ice or concrete, and there wasn’t any rug. The TV didn’t do anything useful, with no apps, just taking up space and looking nice. Bring a laptop or speaker if you want entertainment.
