California Suites Hotel

The landscaping is nice, there's a pool I didn't try, and free coffee in the morning. Nearby you can find stores, a couple of gas stations, McDonald's, Burger King, and a few bars. The rooms all look alike in the dark, and there are no pets. It's a non-smoking place, which I forgot, but it is California. I needed to crash after a six-hour drive, so I didn't check the room until I went to use things. The burner and phone didn't work, and it took four trips to the desk before I was moved to another room. You need to run hot water in the bath to get hot water at the sink. They also require a $250 deposit for the room. It's supposed to be refundable, maybe. Nothing to write home about. Check that everything works when you arrive.

The walls are really thin, and the parking lot is in bad shape for wheelchair users. The lobby is separate from the rooms, so getting around can be confusing, especially for older or disabled guests. I booked through Expedia and wouldn't recommend a long stay here. The outlets barely charged any of my devices, and the front desk guy made it seem like it was my phone. I got so worried I bought a new one, only to have the same problem. It seems the power and Wi-Fi are generally poor. When I asked at the lobby the next day, they just said maintenance would handle it. It's hard to believe they don't already know.

The people were cool, and it’s a cheap, no-frills hotel, but the rooms are loud and the parking lot feels sketchy. I noticed lots of seniors who I think may live there permanently. There’s no continental breakfast. If I’d known the nearby hotels served eggs and cost the same, I would’ve chosen one of those.

The pool is a nice feature and was kept clean, and the room was spacious, clean, and had comfortable beds. The staff were extremely friendly. There's free coffee, a water machine, and a toaster and microwave if you bring food. The property felt safe and had plenty of parking, though the Wi-Fi was unreliable. It's close to San Diego's main sights and great value for the price. It is a little dated, as other reviews say, but you wouldn't expect five-star luxury at this rate. I'd stay again.
