The front desk staff were lovely, service was great, and breakfast was fine. There’s also a decent-sized gym with free weights, and I’d stay here again. The rooms were very clean, though a bit dated, and noise came through the walls easily. I heard neighbors talking and coughing, and the blinds let in enough light to wake me. An alarm a previous guest had left set for 6 a.m. didn’t help. It’s easy to walk around union square from here, and they had night security at the door during my stay. Use caution in the area because there are a lot of homeless people, though that’s not the hotel’s fault.

The biggest drawback is the location. The hotel sits at the edge of the Tenderloin, and Geary St, once known for galleries, hotels, and restaurants, feels less lively now. I know the area, and I wouldn’t turn right out of the hotel at night unless you’re after a bit of a thrill. Adagio can’t change where it is, though. Clift Hotel, diagonally across on the next block, has gone downhill more, in my opinion. Adagio’s a solid option away from Union Square’s bustle and noise, worth four or even 4.5 stars. I was pleasantly surprised after trying other Marriott properties around SF and the Bay Area. The common areas look good, the place is tastefully decorated, and the rooms are roomy and well furnished. I’m a light sleeper, but the sound insulation was good enough for decent sleep. The smaller bathrooms could use a refresh. Titanium Members get complimentary breakfast, and the quality was pretty good. Bartenders were friendly and the drinks were good too. With the extras covered by the mandatory Amenity fee, the value wasn’t bad, though it could certainly cost less.

Tuan, the bellman, went out of his way to make sure we had what we needed, and his hospitality really lifted the stay. We also found the hotel fee worthwhile because of the perks it covered. The neighborhood could be better and the location is just average, but the excellent service and spacious rooms more than made up for those drawbacks. For San Francisco, the rooms are a very good size, and the value was solid.

As a woman traveling alone, feeling safe was my first concern, and I was comfortable walking around the hotel by myself at night. The location is close to pretty much everything. Valet was another easy part of the stay: I felt fine leaving my car, and even during a busy spell it was back in about five minutes. The hotel balances old-fashioned charm with a sleek, modern feel. It’s beautiful and sophisticated without being stuffy. From arrival on, the staff were a pleasure to deal with, helpful at every turn. Management clearly knows what they’re doing and keeps things running well. I’d happily come back to Hotel Adagio. Special thanks to Isaac, Martin, and Flor, you went above and beyond and your gracious hospitality will stay with me.

Tuan made our family feel cared for from the moment we arrived. He’s one of the kindest, most genuine bellmen we’ve met, and he was always welcoming and attentive. As we were leaving at the end of the trip, he gave us bags of chocolate to say thanks, such a thoughtful gesture. He really cares about the guests and is a credit to this warm, welcoming hotel.
