The Charterhouse Causeway Bay

The housekeepers were the best part. They made the beds and changed the towels every day, and were very friendly. The location is convenient if all you need is somewhere to crash, but the rooms are very old and the corridors always smell of cigarettes, despite the no-smoking rule. Free WiFi was so bad I ended up using my phone instead. The walls are paper thin, so we could always hear other guests. If you’re in Hong Kong for work and need somewhere to sit with a laptop, forget it. There’s only a cramped desk in the room, and they don’t let you use the lobby after certain hours. I’d never recommend this hotel unless you just need a place to sleep in a convenient location.

Every staff member I encountered during my 10-night stay was fantastic. The location is between wanchai and Causeway Bay, a bit out of the way, though the surrounding area is interesting enough to make the long walks worthwhile. My room, unfortunately, was filthy from top to bottom. Even the bedside and writing tables looked like they’d never been vacuumed or wiped. I cleaned the easy-to-reach surfaces with a wet tissue and it came away black, despite the housekeeper’s lovely attitude. Through no fault of the hotel, I was also woken many times one unfortunate night by guests in the joined room next door smoking marijuana. It made me cough my lungs out, and the smell wouldn’t go away.

The room looked newly renovated, though it was just okay, but on the first night at 1AM the bathroom flooded while we were showering. Housekeeping brought a water pump after we called, and it didn’t fix anything, so we still couldn’t shower. The front desk had already made a mistake at check-in, giving us a key for 102 when we were meant to be in 101. The English communication from staff was very poor, which made everything more frustrating. Around 3 a.m., Jerry said the only option was to move rooms. By then my friend and I were exhausted. I asked if there could be compensation, such as breakfast or a partial refund, but Jerry said all he could offer was one cup of coffee each in the morning. He kept insisting it WAS OUR FAULT for not wanting to move rooms, and there was no sincere apology. Having this happen on the first day of 2026 was extremely disappointing. It was a very poor experience and I wouldn’t recommend staying here. If you can’t speak Cantonese, no.... :(

We spent a week here and got good value. The hotel was clean, safe, and conveniently placed near plenty of shops and restaurants. The rooms were a decent size, and the cleaning staff were friendly and always offered to help. My one gripe was the WiFi, which kept dropping in and out and made it very hard to get work done.
