Hotel Sole Roma

I write this with a heavy heart and feel ashamed. I came here as a guest, and I'm leaving as an unwitting accomplice to exploitation that tears at the soul. I want to talk about the invisible women, the ones bending over our unmade beds and scrubbing our dirty sinks. Mothers, daughters, wives. Their dignity is taken from them minute by minute. This isn't work. It's modern slavery. Twenty minutes per room is their sentence. In that time, they're meant to make paradise for you while they live in the hell of precarious work. If they don't clean three rooms an hour, they don't eat. Each room beyond those 20 minutes is unpaid labour, a legalized theft of their time and sweat. Breaks are a forbidden dream. Stopping means losing minutes from their pay. I saw one of them standing in the hallway, eating a sandwich and staring at the clock. The cruelest part is how calculated it all is. The hotel knows these women can't say no, and that their silence is worth less than the sheets they iron. Next time you walk into a scented room, listen closely. That silence is the sound of desperation from the person who cleaned it for you. I'll never sleep on those sheets again, not with their exhaustion as a blanket and their exploitation as a pillow. For those women. For humanity.
