SOMA Park Inn – Civic Center

The rooms are fine and the location is great, and this place could be good. But the internet is bad, though with a phone hotspot and AT&T I could still use Twitch and similar things. My problem is Henry, the man running the front desk. He made guests uncomfortable, and I saw him argue with at least four others during my stay. He told me I could get a refund for a nonrefundable room, and I saw him kick people out for having guests. He also got upset when I used the coffee machine after 11am. Neither he nor the other staff seem to understand customer service. They book rooms, kick people out, and don't refund them, so it can end up costing more than a real hotel. Skip this place.

The owners and managers are a friendly, nice family, and check-in and checkout went smoothly. The location is prime, with lots of attractions nearby. Nights, especially weekends, can be noisy, but that's expected downtown. I thought the rooms might be a 3/5, but they were closer to 2/5. There was an off-putting smell when we walked in, probably a mix of mildew and cigarette smoke. The carpet looked dirty, and after being barefoot for under 30 minutes, my feet were filthy, so wear socks or slippers. The fleece blanket had a cigarette burn hole in the middle. The bed and pillows were comfortable, though. If you can live with those issues, it's an okay convenient stop for a short visit.

The manager's tone and rudeness toward me bothered me most. There was no sympathy, just a "that's how it is" attitude, and the front desk guy was rude too. There were lots of houseless people outside during Superbowl weekend. They provide one roll of toilet paper, the towels are tiny, and they don't allow early check-in even if you're traveling from out of state or offer to pay extra. Also, don't stand near the front door.

the room looked clean and the staff were nice, so it was alright for one night. but the leaky shower and outlets were frustrating. the toilet paper was almost gone, there was hair on the pillows, and the shelves were wobbly and uneven. most of the outlets didn't work, and plugs kept falling out. for the price i expected a decent room. nothing was seriously wrong, but i wouldn't stay longer or come back.
