Union Square Plaza Hotel

There was no heat in the room, and a broken window frame let in a draft. I tried propping up the top frame with its latch to keep it from opening. When I asked about heat, the man said turning on the old radiator would heat the whole building. They ran it for one night, then shut it off the next, even though it was still in the 50s. The room was quite small but had the essentials: a mini-fridge, hot water, and daily cleaning with fresh towels. The old building has creaky floors, thin walls, and odd smells. The sheets didn't cover the whole bed, and while the shower had soap and shampoo, I'd bring my own. It's close enough to downtown for an easy walk. Fine for an emergency night if everywhere else is booked.

The staff were nice and helpful when I had technical issues, and it's convenient to have everything nearby. They keep the hotel's entrance locked and require a key card to get in. But it's an old building, and the rooms and bathrooms are cramped with little room to walk around. There's no AC. I visited in the fall, so that was all right. The location felt unsafe to me, especially at night. There were many homeless people around, and human waste was all over the streets. I wouldn't recommend staying here alone because of the poor quality and location. I don't think it's safe for kids or women. You can stay, but don't go out at night.

Our first visit to this hotel was a few weeks ago, and the front desk service was very poor. We checked in at night and the man there was shockingly rude and unhelpful when we asked questions. He didn't seem to want to assist us, wasn't listening, and kept responding with an attitude. Music was blasting, and he smelled strongly of marijuana. When we asked for his name, he wouldn't tell us. I hope management takes this seriously and improves customer service. First impressions matter, and after this unpleasant check-in, I can't recommend the hotel.

The room was tiny, smelled bad, and wasn't clean. At checkout, we asked if they could hold our luggage, but they couldn't. We then asked about options, like paying for a late checkout, and the woman at the entrance didn't care. She refused to help us find another solution and just kept saying she couldn't store the bags. When we said we wouldn't return, even though we'd stayed several times, she replied, “Fine by me.” She sat on her phone and offered no service at all, yet she'll still get her paycheck at the end of the month. Terrible service.
